This website also shows how bad planning procedures, lack of regulations, and lack of enforcement by Local Authorities, Government Departments and State Agencies, caused catastrophic destruction to the Kilminchy Lakes that nearly wiped out all of the waterbirds, not once, but more than half a dozen times in the past 2 years.

For this is Kilminchy, where hi-tec meets ecologic, where concrete meets conservation and where the silicon chip meets the fibreglass rod........

What's happening at the Kilminchy Lakes..........

By the mid 1990's, mischievous planners were at their drawing boards, a small piece of land would be turned into a new, model village of over 700 houses, a shopping boulevard, adjoined by tree lined avenues resembling downtown Los Angeles, with restaurants, a pub and commercial stores, a crèche, a nursing home and a retirement complex.

Kilminchy would look like no other village, with the planners responsible for Kilminchy hailing it as a dream place to live, a model development with modern living, luxurious homes in comfortable surroundings, landscaped green areas encompassing architectural features...

In 1999 Kilminchy Village was born, and the reality could not have been further from the truth. Houses thrown up like Lego, and coming to pieces just as fast, with unfinished and incomplete roads and pathways carrying rivers of paint washing from the walls of houses when it rained, landscaped green areas hiding the piles of builders rubble. A sewerage system unable to cope, unchecked, overloaded and mixed-up with the storm water system delivering harmful and hazardous pollution into the Kilminchy Lakes on a daily basis.

The Kilminchy Lakes are located in the Kilminchy Village, just off the M7 Motorway and 2 miles outside of Portlaoise Town on the Dublin Road in Co. Laois, Ireland.
